WHY INDUSTRY STANDARDS ARE IMPORTANT
Using standards can offer a set of powerful business and marketing tools for ours and related industries. We can use them to fine-tune our performance and manage the risks we face while operating in more efficient and sustainable ways; they allow us to demonstrate the quality of what we do to our customers; and they help us see how to embed best practice into our organizations.
We endeavor here to provide a definitive list of standards for the loudspeaker and acoustic industries published by organizations such as ALTI, AES, EIA, CEA and others.
We’re open to including standards that may not already be included here. If you would like to help compile this list, have a suggestion for inclusion or would like to join the Standards Committee, please contact us. If you have an interest please contact John Busenitz, Standards Committee Chair, at info@almaint.org
In a global economy of rapidly emerging new technologies and markets, standards help set the rules and establish the frameworks, making it easier to innovate successfully. We look forward to your input and participation in making this list as replete as possible.
ALTI Standards
There are currently four standards of documents
1. Nomenclature Prints (NP)
Establish standard nomenclature for loudspeaker component features and correlate the nomenclature to the feature.
2. Dimensioning/Tolerancing Guidelines (DG)
Establish guidelines for the dimensioning and tolerancing of loudspeaker components, including defining the special characteristics and the tolerance to be applied to each feature. These will primarily used by design engineers (in conjunction with the NP) to help create more standardized prints with reasonable tolerances. A DG is created for each corresponding NP.
3. Measurement Guidelines (MG)
Establish guidelines for the measurement of loudspeaker components, including defining the most practical and effective equipment for and methods of measurement. The MG will primarily be used by quality and metrology activities (in conjunction with existing measurement standards and ALMA International Test Methods) to help make more consistent and repeatable measurements. An MG is created for each corresponding DG.
4. Test Methods (TM)
Establish detailed instructions for component feature measurement. Some of these documents have already been produced by other organizations, so our first effort will be to locate all existing and relevant test methods. However, if none exist for a particular feature measurement, we will create an ALMA International Test Method.
Documents are numbered with their 2-letter abbreviations followed by a sequential 3-digit number. For example, Dimensioning/Tolerancing Guidelines for Spiders is document number DG-004.
Revisions are indicated by date on approved documents and by “DRAFT” on unapproved documents
DRAFT documents can be released with the approval of the author(s) and the subcommittee chair only, while non-DRAFT documents must have subcommittee approval (e.g. at annual meetings) for release.
The goal is to update DRAFT documents on the website every quarter.
Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R) information, if known, should be listed at the end of each TM.
